A rational Search Engine Optimization (SEO) approcah Print E-mail
Website Optimization is all about getting a targeted audiance come to your site from Search Engines. As most of the web business traffic is driven by search engines, it should be understood by every entrepreneur who wants to succeed on the Internet.

Search Engines have their own goal: to keep their rank they must provide the most interesting results to people's search within seconds. To get rancked up by google, yahoo or bing, all your job is to allign your site with their constraint. Make your site easy to maket for them and they will give you back.

  1. It all starts from your Marketing positionning. First clearly define goals for your SEO efforts, define carefully your positionning and your target group and what type of customer you would like the search engine to bring you.
  2. Optimisation isn’t a one-time event, so the manager must commit himself to the optimisation process. Search engine algorithms change regularly, so what has worked last semester may not work for the next. Keep patience as results often take weeks to see, this is especially true the smaller you are, and the newer you are online.
  3. Find the best keywords from the start of the project. If you’re on a tight budget, use the free versions of Keyword Discovery (www.keyworddiscovery.com) or WordTracker (www.wordtracker.com), both of which also have more powerful paid versions. Ignore the numbers these tools show; what’s important is the relative volume of one keyword to another. Another good free tool is Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool.
  4. Have web analytics in place from the start. These measurment tools (web analytics software) will track what’s working and what’s not. At we use the free google's web analytics tools (www.google.com/analytics) which contibuted a lot to acheive a great ranking of 5/10 of www.alkia.net (good benchmark for other Thai SME).
  5. Build a really great web site. Ask continuoysly yourself, “Is my web really one of the 10 best in the world on this topic?” Keep releax: If it’s not, make it better, and better and better again. Check your HTML (http://validator.w3.org/) and CSS syntax (http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/). Search engines are sensitive to the quality of the HTML code produced. For Google if the technical part of the web is poor the site attractivenes is poor: Why promote a site that will not display correctly in Explorer 8? It ranks down, naturally.
  6. Use a CMS (Content management system) to build a content based dynamic web site that allows all your organisation to participate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_management_system). Since 2005, Alkia recomment and contribute to Joomla the best free CMS to date (http://www.joomla.org/).
  7. Forge SEO-friendly URLs. Google ranks better the static HTML pages than the dynamic ones. It's easy to understand: from the search engine perspective dynamic page are far les reliable, they can suffer from technical issues (have you ever see the horible 500 Server Error) and the content is so volatile that it may not match the keywords after few hours of indexing. How to do when you have a php based web site: there is a very powerfull solution called URL rewriting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rewrite_engine).
  8. Use keywords in your URLs and file names, such as yourdomain.com/red-widgets.html. Don’t overreact, a file with 3+ hyphens tends to look spammy and users may be hesitant to click on it. Related bonus tip: Use hyphens in URLs and file names, not underscores. Hyphens are treated as a “space,” while underscores are not.
  9. Include a site map page. Search Engines can’t index pages that are linked by flash animation for example. A site map will help Search engines to find all the important pages on your site, and to understand your site’s hierarchy. If your site is large, make several site map pages. Keep each one to less than 75 links max to be safe.
  10. Open up a Pay Per Click account. Whether it’s Google’s AdWords or Yahoo’s Search Marketing or something else, this is a fast track to get actual search volume for your keywords. Yes, it costs money, but if you have the budget it’s worth the investment.
  11. The page title is the single most important on-page SEO factor. It’s rare to rank highly for a primary term (2-5 words) without that term being part of the page title.
  12. Create great, unique content. If you’re selling the same product that 30 others and everyone is using the official descriptions from the supplier, this is a great opportunity. Write your own product descriptions, using the keyword research you did before to target actual words searchers use, and make a page that blow the competition away.
  13. Use your keywords as anchor text when linking internally. Anchor text helps tells spiders what the linked-to page is about. Links that say “click here” do nothing for your search engine visibility.
  14. Build links to your web intelligently. Submit your site to trusted directories such as Yahoo, Business.com, Aviva, DMOZ, and Best of the web. When local earch matters to you, seek links from trusted sites in your geographic area—the Chamber of Commerce (FTCC), etc. Analyze the links to your competitors' links to find links you should get also (competition is competition).
  15. Create the buzz! Start a blog and participate with other related blogs or mettablogs. Search engines, Google especially, love blogs for the fresh content and highly-structured data. Beyond that, there’s no better way to join the conversations that are already taking place about your industry and/or company. Reading and commenting on other blogs can also increase your exposure and help you acquire new links. Put your blog at yourdomain.com/blog so your main domain gets the benefit of any links to your blog posts. If that’s not possible, use blog.yourdomain.com.
  16. Use social media marketing wisely. If you’re a service-oriented business, use Yahoo Answers to position yourself as an expert in your industry. With any social media site you use, the first rule is don’t spam! Be an active and attractive, contributing member of the site. The idea is to interact with potential customers, not annoy them.
